A special need student: different...don't thinks soo!!
From two months, a Syrian boy, Malik, who has mental disability (trisomy 21) came to our school, he became a student in my KG2 class. When he started to come he was too shy, and most of his time quiet. He never tried to participate in class, but this week everything changed. When i was explaining the letter "Q" , I was astonished when seeing Malik writing on the board alone letter Q, also Malik became able to count from 1 to 10.Day after day,Malik was able to know the names of his friends and distribute for them the books correctly, but i didn't know how he was distinguishing the books from each other. And at the beginning he stayed away from the students, but now he is always beside them, hugging and kissing them.Although he get used to his friends, and me,but he refused to come near to any other teacher, this is probably because I spend most of the time in his class. So, Malik isn't really different all what he needs is someone who believes in his abilities, and provide him with care.

It's nice of you to tackle this maria.
ReplyDeleteSo true, jut like any other student, Malik has a fundamental need, that they are believed and trusted in!
Congratulations! You are really a hard worker and lucky that you achieved all this in this little time. It's because you have a big will and a big heart; you've always been praising him when you told me about him!
He is so kind. As Hanaa said, I think you did a great and hard job Maria. I think those students should be treated as well as their colleagues, as possible as you can , because at the end they are humans maybe with different abilities but with feelings. As Hanaa mentioned that those students need to be trusted and believed, in order to motivate them to achieve.
ReplyDeleteInteresting story Maria. every teacher should now how to deal with the special needs students. i think you discovered Malik's abilities and potentials because you observed him and help him adapt in the classroom and this is the job of the good teacher, to trust the student and give him/her the opportunity to show his/her abilities.
